I’ve been to the Wagamama restaurants in London and Sydney many times in the past and always loved them, even though the food hall concept of communal tables can mean that your food doesn’t arrive at the same time as your friends.  The food was usually worth the risk and there were usually only a few minutes wait between meals.

Sadly I’d read enough bad reviews about the Subiaco venue not to fancy trying my luck when they were busy.  Happily my friend and I had tickets to a 1920’s Jazz night that started at 6:30 last Friday and needed somewhere to grab dinner before-hand.

With the restaurant practically to ourselves at such an early hour we gleefully found the service fast, friendly and attentive, and our meals and drinks arrived in unison every time.

For starters we decided to share the Edamame and Miso Soup with Pickles.  I am still quite new to Japanese food but these were the best I have experienced so far!  Both dishes were hot, fresh and delicious and the pickles injected an interesting and tasty tang.  So far, so good.

Next up we both ordered the Spicy Yasai Itame (fried tofu with red chillies, zucchini, broccoli, red onions, mint, basil, coriander, ginger, garlic and a wedge of lime, served on steamed jasmine rice) and it was also hot, fresh and absolutely scrumptious.  I loved that I could taste all of the fresh herbs and spices and that it had enough of a spicy kick to keep me reaching for my sweet cocktail.  The vegetables were wonderfully crunchy and the tofu was fried to perfection.  Success!

Vegan options are clearly marked on the menu (big tick!) and our bill came to a very reasonable $66 for two entrees, two mains and two cocktails.

I can’t vouch for the service or quality during rush hours, but I can say that we had nothing short of a beautiful experience early on a Friday night and that I’ve had daydreams about that delicious stir-fry ever since.
