Salsa’s Fresh Mex GrillJuly 24th, 2012 20 comments
Remember when I wrote to Salsa’s Fresh Mex Grill back in March?
I’m still impatiently waiting for them to bring vegan frijoles and rice to the masses but in the meantime I thought I’d venture there today in the name of research, adventure and sharing my findings with you.
EXPERIMENT: Can Tex-Mex Food be Tex-Mex Without Beans & Rice?! *cue dramatic music, da da daaaaaa*
I had my doubts but as Chief Scientist in this experiment, I had to keep an open mind. Vegans everywhere were depending on me.
Salsa’s will happily make your meal to order, so armed with a copy of their Allergen Information (which clearly states all vegan items), I bravely marched in and ordered my version of the Veggie Packed Bowl – grilled zucchini, broccoli, onion and capsicum with corn chips, salad, guacamole, jalapenos, salsa, salsa fresca and pineapple & mango salsa ($11.95).
The verdict? It was really good! Fresh and tasty, without the heaviness that comes from beans and rice. I suspected the tropical salsa might be a bit much on top of all the other ingredients but I really enjoyed it and it off-set the spiciness of the jalapenos perfectly.
Salsa’s tortillas and taco shells are vegan too so you can mix and match, and they are located in shopping malls around the country so it’s good to know that there is another vegan option when you’re out and about.
I still want beans and rice, though, Salsa’s! Please remember the hungry vegans! xx

We have some similar chains here, one in particular that we’ll stop at on the way home from work if I don’t feel like cooking- although I’m lucky, their rice and beans are vegan. They have a mango salsa too, although only for a few months in the summer. It’s yummy!
Ohhhh YUM. It’s so good to know there are vegan take-away options when you need them, isn’t it. I will keep campaigning for the vegan beans and rice down here!
Keep campaigning! I only recently went vegan a few months ago and I really miss their rice!! It says on the chart that the black beans are now vegan tho!
Hopefully your pleas will be heard- vegan beans and rice would be a great side to this delicious looking bowl!
Absolutely! I won’t give up!
I’m actually not sure I’d be able to eat just that as a meal as I LOVE my beans and rice haha! But I’d definitely order it as a side
haha, I know, it would be so much better with the beans and rice. I will keep pestering them and hope they come to the party soon! In the meantime, I’ll just have to make my own.
That looks so yummy! Those veggies look great, but may I ask; what is capsicum?
haha, oh I think you call them bell peppers over there??
Gotcha. I love learning the different names for foods in other countries. I think my fave is that England calls eggplant ‘aubergine’
hehe, I love that too.
Don’t give up!
hehe, roger that!
This is amazing!! Thank you for doing this! I do opt for Salsa’s when I’m at a food court, so this is such a great post!

My pleasure!

I’m still waiting, waiting, waiting too… I tried the black bean burritos (without rice) when they briefly had them and they were awesome, so even if they brought them back I’d be happy!
In the meantime I hit up Mad Mex as much as possible. They’re awesome. We did their big burrito (1kg) challenge and nearly died
hahaha, nice work! I haven’t tried Mad Mex yet but there is a store opening near my work next month and I plan to be the first in line!
You haven’t? Oh my god, you’ll never go to Salsa’s again! They are vegan mexican paradise (if you like trashy “not the most authentic” food, like I do).
I’ve complained to UrbanSpoon about the vegan-friendly label on the Salsa’s page. What a load of sh*t… Suggesting “our crinkle cut chips” as the vegan option is kind of a joke… They may as well offer a garden salad (like suburban pubs do haha).
P.S. Just got the email from Mad Mex about the new CBD store, and they’re doing $5 naked burritos on Thursday and Friday to celebrate their opening
haha, YESSSS!! Thanks so much for the recommendation, Eloise! I tried it for the first time yesterday and loved it! I will definitely be heading back for the $5 special tomorrow!
