Unless you’ve been living on another planet (which I tend to do from time to time), you’ll know that last Friday was Β International Star Wars Day!

When I was a kid and the original (and the best, don’t even get me started…) Star Wars films were first released on TV, the local radio station would play the movie soundtrack SIMULCAST!Β Β DA DAΒ DAAAAA!!Β  Back beforeΒ home theatres and stereo systems, this was a BIG DEAL. Β My Dad, sister and I would spread blankets and pillows on the lounge room floor and crank up the radio, and Mum would make big platters of nibbles that we would munch on while we watched the latest and greatest episode.

I loved Star Wars then and I still love it today.Β Β Geek alert!Β  And IΒ still want a pet ewokΒ and a lightsaber.

To celebrate Star Wars Day this year, my friend and I went to see the West Australian Symphony Orchestra performΒ the best of the Star Wars theme songs!Β Β Ohhh yes, we did!Β  Fifth row, baby, and even a surprise visit from the Stormtroopers!Β  OH MY YODA, how we loved it!!

Afterwards, still giddy with geeky excitement, we went for a drink and got to talking about food in Star Wars. Β Does anyone in Star Wars actually eat??Β Β Oh, there was the blue milk and porridgeyΒ stuff that Luke’s Aunt made in an early scene, but after that I guess they’re just living off The Force and the coolness of the lightsabers. Β We therefore agreed that I needed to make some sort of lightsaber food immediately.

Enter…Β Β the lightsaber fruit roll-up!! Β DA DAΒ DAAAAA!! Β Β Incredibly simple to make and incredibly healthy and delicious, these are sure to be a big hit in your galaxy. Β Plus they’re space traveller approved, all dehydrated and stuff.

Total Time 3 hours
Servings 8

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of fresh or frozen raspberries
  • 1/2 tsp organic coconut sugar

Instructions

  • Pre-heat the oven to 90C/195F.
  • In a pot over medium heat, gently simmer raspberries and coconut sugar until the mixture is the consistency of apple sauce.
  • On a baking tray, spread the mixture onto baking paper to about 5mm in thickness.
  • Bake for 2.5 - 3 hours or until the mixture comes away from the paper easily.
  • Allow to cool, then slice with a pizza cutter and roll up.
  • Enjoy them with your favourite Star Wars episode! And if you want to wrap one around a torch and pretend it's a lightsaber, I'm totally down with that.

I love that the symphony got into the act. It took me a while to figure out the connection between Star Wars and “May the fourth…” πŸ™‚ My kids love fruit leathers and these look so easy! I’m going to try making my own this summer. And they look easier than canning batch after batch of jam to preserve the harvest!

Absolutely!! You could freeze the fruit and make them all year around! πŸ™‚ They last quite a while once they’ve been turned into leathers, too. Your kids will love it!

This looks great Im amazed that fruit could turn into those leather sticks. Would this work with blackberries because I have TONNES of those in my freezer from the summer?

Absolutely! πŸ™‚ You could make it with any fruit and you can just blend it in the blender if you like them smoother, and could add sweetener or cinnamon if you fancied it. Give it a try – I was surprised by how easy it was! Nom!

You’re going to think me crazy, but I never saw a single star wars movie until just this year! Now I’ve seen most… I think I’m up to episode 4. I have no idea how I made it that long… I mean, I was born in ’77 so I was certainly the right age to have seen them… Please don’t hate me πŸ™‚

Looks delicious bella! Might give these a whirl… I’m thinking that any of the frozen berries would work equally as well… Like Barb above, I missed out on all of the Star Wars hype, until some mad ex boyfriend was horrified that I had not seen a single lightsaber and dragged me to 1 maybe 2 as they were being re-re-re-released yet again… Fortunately we then broke up, and I never saw the rest! So I don’t get the Star Wars things at all! But you are one very funny, sparkly, geeky girl! Love you heaps xx

haha, thanks Mandy Moo!! Love you too, gorgeous girl!! And yep, any other fruit would be just as good and you could add a bit of sweetener or cinnamon if you fancied it. Miss youuuuu!! And you know I won’t give up until you have seen all of the original trilogy! xxx

Oops, did not know there was such a thing as Int’l Star Wars day! I should have guessed from Go Bake Yourself as her post was full of SW references. As I commented to her, I saw SW in the theater when it first came out. Sat in the front row. Now I feel old ;-)!

haha, I felt old writing ‘before home theatres’. πŸ™‚ We are vintage and everyone knows vintage is best! Just like the original SW trilogy!

i make home made seasame and chia snaps but my vegan friends dont eat honey so i may make this instead for them. i wonder if i could put chia seeds in them… what do you use for extra sweetness in things?

You could definitely add chia seeds, Jacinta, plus pure maple syrup or coconut nectar if you fancy a little more sweetness. Lucky friends! πŸ™‚
