Unless you’ve been living under a cactus, you’ll know that the recent arrival of La Cholita had all of Northbridge buzzing.  Mexican tapas-style food and 67  types of Tequila??!  Ole!!

Word on the street was that they had some pretty smokin’ vegan options on their menu.  So in the name of Mexican adventure I donned my best Senorita outfit, rounded up my newly vegan friends Kyllie and Dom, and headed on down there one balmy Friday night to find out!

The verdict?  As opposed to the more relaxed tapas-style bars around the city (think Helvetica, Andaluz or Cheeky Sparrow), La Cholita is more food than bar-orientated.  Scoring a table was difficult at best and we felt pressured to move on as soon as we’d eaten.

The staff were nice, if a little stressed, but you’d better not be thirsty, because the drinks take an age.

The food was simple but tasty.  There were not as many vegan options as we’d hoped, but we ordered the Guacamole and hand-made Corn Chips, Salsa, Refried Beans, Mexican Rice and Tortillas and they were all extremely well priced and fun to share.

The free condiments were a nice touch, too.

We all agreed this was our favourite – fresh guacamole with hand-made tortilla chips:

The salsa was fresh and spicy.

All up, it’s a great place to drop in with a bunch of friends later in the night when you’ve had your fill of drinks, don’t mind the rowdiness, and just fancy some tapas-style food to round off the night.

Champagne, hon. It was 4 years ago but I vaguely remember us being excited that they had a vegan-friendly vintage.
